Connecting with Next Generation Science Standards
Jumbo Minds’ books help teach science and so, naturally, we want to help teachers! One way we’re helping is to map the vocabulary and concepts in our books to the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).
About the Standards: The NGSS, released in 2013, were created by 40 experts from 26 states. NGSS were designed to update the 15 year old science standards based on current research and science understanding. The foundation for NGSS was the Framework for K-12 Science Education, which presents each standard with three dimensions. These three facets include:
- scientific behaviors (Practices)
- ideas that connect regions of science (Crosscutting Concepts)
- deeper instruction and assessments (Disciplinary Core Ideas)
The science practices taught in NGSS contain skills that scientists and engineers use on a daily basis. By utilizing these three practices for each standard, scientific habits will be formed which will better prepare our children for a world filled with innovations and technology.
It’s easy to utilize Jumbo Minds’ books to support NGSS! The NGSS are written to promote scientific learning, investigation, and patterns of thinking. The words in Jumbo Minds’ books support the NGSS concepts, and can be used to introduce the language of science, which encourages the development of the scientific habits demonstrated in the standards.
